Tonight I attended the course named “ English of Science and Technology”. The teacher showed us something about Albert Einstein, the considered-to-be greatest scientist of 20th century, , which greatly struck my heart.
Albert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. as a child, he failed to showed the least talent to learn and always fell behind other students. However, he displayed great interest and curiosity in science and technology and exerted himself to solve the practically mathematical problems. Through successive and tough efforts Einstein graduated from university with a degree of mathematics in Switzerland. In 1905, he began to publish serial articles and papers in the professional magazines and journals, which shocked the whole world. And for the theories he established he won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921.
Nevertheless, as Einstein is Jewish, he was compelled to flee his country and settled in American for the rest of his life in case of the slaughter of Jews in Germany in 1933. since then, he conducted his research and study in the United States.
In the 1939, for fear that the Germany would make atom bombs prior to other countries and cast the bombs to bombard countless innocent and inculpable lives, he filed a proposal to the then-president Roosevelt to set study of atom bombs into motion. This act quickly won the consent of the president and he strongly supported Einstein’s innovation with plenty of material supplies. In 1942, the first atom bomb came into being. The revolutionary invention conduced tremendously and directly to the termination of the second world war, while America dropped two atomic bombs respectively into Hiroshima and Nagasaki, resulting in innumerable casualties.
Whereas, witnessing so many lives were bereaved directly because of his invention, Einstein felt grief-stricken and was wavering whether his creation was worthy in the long run. Then he earnestly promoted peace across the world and advocated no-war policy among all the countries.
In fact, I also showed great sympathy to the lamentable people losing their lives in the bombarded area in Japan. Most of them did not approve of the war-policy towards China and other Asian countries, but the forces of Right Wing and the Fascists acted willfully and dreamed about overwhelming all oriental countries. This brutal action led to a counterattack to their own country, causing almost devastating consequence.
And for the sake of technological development, Einstein, after the world war two, had distinctively got the awakening that technology is really a two-edge sword, with which we can get where are and more easily lose what we already have. We can use the continuously-updated techniques to sweep away all the obstacles and opponents that block our forwarding steps, but meantime, it can also put our lives to an end within seconds. So how significant it is for the high technologies to be mastered by the right people, those who are virtuous and righteous, who are always harboring the mind of serving the whole being, who are willing to move mountain and earth in realizing our dream of meliorating our current conditions! If the right technology falls into the evil hands, I dare not imagine what will happen afterwards. the typical example is that if nuclear weapons fall into the hand the terrorism, a nation as large as china assaulted by the terrorists can barely leave imprints of its ever-existence overnight.
So that is why some pessimists argue that we are taken by the technology to get where we are, but will one day be taken back where we originated. Though it is somewhat negative, it does draw our great attention to how to avoid the misuse of technology. None of us want to witness extinction of human with our own hands come into reality. |
