Yesterday I encountered my friend Zhang Kai in the canteen, and we enjoyed the meal together. During the pleasant chat, I groaned that the mid-term exams tormented me to death and I had to burn midnight oil, which resulted in my unbalanced and irregular life that caused some awful acne on my cheeks. He smiled to me and said, “Xiaoqi, don’t you think that sometimes it is a blessing to have some small ailments? There is a popular saying that every acne is a treasure. Therefore, every acne on your face is very precious, for on the one hand, it can help pump out the toxic materials from your body, and on the other hand, it signals your potential health problems and indicates you should pay enough attention to your rest and diet.” Hearing his words, I felt shocked an speechless for a moment, then uncontrollable laughed gleefully, “You are absolutely right!”
In fact, there are many things in our life which seem not favorable at the first glance, but turn out to be a blessing in disguise. The most significant point is the angle from which you value the problem. In the past, I often heard the elderly say that a small ailment is actually a blessing. At that time, I kept skeptical of it and puzzled why a disease would ever mean blessing. This puzzlement had been haunting my mind for a long time and not until this summer vacation did I get its point!
This summer vacation, unfortunately, I came down with hoarseness due to certain reason. Worse still, it worsened gradually from acute pharyngitis to chronic one. I was tortured to death. I had to give up my morning-reading habit for nearly two months. What is worse, I could no longer practice oral English freely as I used to, which was a mental suffering to me who could not stop talking once opening my mouth.
However, while my throat was under the weather, my overall health condition was bettering. Due to hoarseness, I have to abandon all the fried, oily and spicy food. Meantime, I must eat more fruits and drink honey every day. With time passing by, the acne on my cheeks was declining miraculously, and I broke my own history record of not having a single spot of acne for more than two months! Now my throat is recovering little by little, but I still keep alert of my diet and now and again I will drink some herbal soup to keep me vigorous than ever.
Now I have come to understand the real meaning of “a small ailment is a blessing”. Once a person gets sick, say some chronic but not deadly diseases like pharyngitis, rhinitis, etc, he will pay special attention to his diets and rest compared with average individuals. He will not eat unhealthy food easily. So he may get sick with the small illness, but his overall condition may be better than others. I have read a survey showing that people who often catch a cold have a far lower possibility of getting cancer than those who seldom. At that time, I felt it totally absurd, but now after meditating on it, it seems reasonable to a large extent. Those who often catch a cold will seldom eat fried and oily food and work out more regularly. Therefore, they will not get severe illness easily.
There goes a saying that illness comes from mouth. When you care enough about what you eat, you have already successfully keep illness outdoor at a large distance. However, some people who do not get sick easily and claim fear of nothing, tend to lose their lives once getting ill. Why? It is because these people tend to believe that they are very healthy and can eat anything casually and overwork. Then their health may be ruined by long-term weariness and unhealthy diets.
Of course, I am not boasting the significance of getting ailments, nor am I encouraging you to get small disease in order to prevent severe one! You should all know that if we do not care about the small illness, it will also develop into a big one that will claim your life. What I want to tell you is that whether you often get ill or not, you should take special care of your diets and rest as well as your exercise. Only by doing so can help you relieve your acute disease, get rid of small one, and build a stronger body if you are already healthy!
Coming back to my dormitory, I thought of what Mr Zhang told me and picked up a mirror to see my acne. Thinking of the sentence “ every acne is indeed a treasure”, I felt totally relaxed. Yes, a small ailment is a blessing, and I think I need to drink some herbal soup now.
