At a weekend, I took a stroll with my wife in the street. When we were walking leisurely, my wife slowed down her pace suddenly. I turned round and saw her staring through the glass door of a fashion parlor at a very elegant high-class skirt.
“Would you like to have a look?” I encouraged my wife. She smiled and nodded. The moment we stepped into the parlor, the female owner was smiling and rising from the sofa. Surprisingly, I seemed to have seen her somewhere before. Touching the fashionable skirt, my wife showed a deepest affection to it. The owner told us that the skirt was a best-seller and she only had the last one in her shop. Her words further affected my wife. But when I put my hand into the pocket, I felt terribly awkward, knowing that I forgot to take money with me.
Seeing me hesitating, my wife knew what was going on immediately. she pulled me away and said to me, “The owner of the shop used to sell jewelries. We have bought a golden jewel in her shop before. At that time we did not have enough money, but she allowed us to take the jewel back home first and deliver the money to her later.” I came to understand the whole matter right away. No wonder I felt acquainted with the owner when I entered the shop. My wife told me with full confidence, “Based on the trust she bestowed upon us in the past, as long as we talked to her sincerely, she was bound to let us take the shirt back home first.”
However, when my wife spoke out our idea, the owner’s reaction was totally beyond our imagination. She acted downright differently from the past and shook her head without the least hesitation. I felt considerably embarrassed, so did my wife. But she said to the owner with smiles, “Before I got married to my husband, we had bought a jewel in your shop. At that time we did not have sufficient money for the golden jewel worth more than 2,000 yuan. But you allowed us to get it back home then. Why did you lose confidence in us now?” “It is different from what it used to be.” The owner showed no compromise in her face. “What is the difference? We are still the ones we used to be!”
“Because at that time, you did not get married and your love was more valuable than the jewel. If your got the jewel back without paying money to me the next day, your girlfriend would think you were of poor morality and would not feel like marrying you.” “But now you are worried that I will not give you the money just because I have got married?” “Yes. I was not worried before your marriage. But think about this: now you have got married and lived together for more than ten years. Time would have dusted and stained your love. Even though you are still who you used to be, now after ten years, you have lost the purity and romance of love. You have become a benefit union. If I still trust you, I will risk the chance of being deceived. Never had we imagined love would differ so tremendously before and after marriage in the eyes of the owner. |
