Topic:
Some people think that history is of no use in our lives while others think we should learn from history because it helps us understand the present. Discuss.
正文:
History has long been a compulsory subject in middle schools in many countries due to its reflective and enlightening function. However, currently some people deem history useless in our lives. To me, I would argue that history is playing a pivotal role and we shall by no means discard it.
Those history opponents deny the status of history in our lives thinking that history is simply a collection of the bygones that are meaningless to our present lives. From their perspective, time has changed and even if the same case takes place today, its context and backgrounds may have changed tremendously, which means the old lessons and methods learnt from history will probably not work out again. Therefore, they believe learning history is a waste of time.
However, I am among all the proponents arguing that the benefit of learning history is too obvious and huge to be ignored. Though the current era has noticeable differences from the past, we still can draw out some unchanged essential rules and principles from history to guide our future development. For instance, most of us have learnt the whole process of the Second World War, a brutal human invasion and slaughter that resulted in immeasurable loss of lives. By learning the history of World War Two, we can form a clear perspective of wars, which pushes us to promote peace and development as the two big main themes in our contemporary society. Whoever intends to launch a war for personal benefits may be harshly condemned and even penalized internationally. Another typical illustration is China’s Cultural Revolution that lasted during 1966-1976. The then government leaders were misled by some false ideology and persecuted the elites across various industries by either sending them to labor in the countryside or insulting them in various ways. Quite a number of intellectuals could not bear the insult and committed suicide. By learning this period of history, we can deeply realize only by placing huge emphasis on education can a nation become truly strong and powerful.
From the examples proposed above, we can learn that history is just like a mirror that reflects all the good and bad of our past. After learning history, we can draw on its merits and bypass its drawbacks. It is more than true to say that history helps us understand the past, the present even the future. |
