New releases featuring Tom Cruise and Adam Sandler lost out to older titles at the box office this past weekend, with 'Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted' claiming the top spot for the second weekend in a row.
The DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. DWA +1.18%movie took in $35.5 million, bringing its cumulative domestic total to $120.5 million. 'Madagascar 3' faced little competition on the family-film front, though that will change with Friday's opening of 'Brave,' from Walt Disney Co.'s DIS -0.19%Pixar Animation Studios.
'Prometheus,' the science-fiction thriller from director Ridley Scott, was No. 2. 'Prometheus,' from News Corp.'s NWSA +1.06%Twentieth Century Fox, grossed $20.2 million, bringing its cumulative domestic receipts to $88.9 million. News Corp. also owns The Wall Street Journal.
The Broadway-musical-turned-movie 'Rock of Ages,' from Time Warner Inc.'s TWX +2.79%Warner Bros. Pictures, failed to move audiences. It took in just $15.1 million in its first weekend. The movie stars Mr. Cruise as a rock star whose act is threatened by a puritanical couple seeking to clean up Los Angeles's Sunset Strip. It also features Catherine Zeta-Jones and Alec Baldwin. The movie, with music from bands including Poison and Def Leppard, was No. 3 at the box office.
'Snow White and the Huntsman' was next, taking in $13.8 in its third week in theaters. It was released by Comcast Corp.'s CMCSA +1.24%Universal Pictures.
Sandler vehicle 'That's My Boy' also struggled in its opening weekend. The movie, from Sony Corp.'s SNE +1.54%Columbia Pictures and which also features 'Saturday Night Live' performer Andy Samberg, generated $13 million in box-office receipts.
'Men in Black 3' and 'The Avengers' rounded out the top spots. 'Men in Black 3' took in $10 million, bringing its cumulative domestic grosses to $152.7 million and its cumulative world-wide receipts to more than $500 million. 'The Avengers,' from Disney's Marvel Studios, took in $8.9 million, boosting its cumulative domestic grosses to $586.7 million and its cumulative world-wide receipts to $1.42 billion.
