Hollywood suffered its lowest-grossing weekend so far this year, with no major movie openings, feeble performances from the minor films that did open and tepid holdovers from the previous weekend.
As of Sunday morning the box office was on track to bring in a cumulative $67 million over the weekend, according to early estimates, nearly 18% lower than the same weekend last year, according to Hollywood.com.
The only bright spots came from some of the weekend's less conventional releases. '2016: Obama's America,' the low-budget documentary critical of President Barack Obama, remained in the top-10 highest-grossing films, earning $3.3 million on 2,017 screens. The $2.5 million film, distributed by Rocky Mountain Pictures, has now grossed $26.2 million since its opening.
And a familiar title scored in re-release, as 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' hit IMAX screens, earning $1.8 million on 267 screens, for a per-screen average of $6,554. The 1981 classic and the first installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, 'Raiders' was distributed by Viacom Inc.'s VIAB +2.07% Paramount Pictures.
'The Possession,' a supernatural horror movie from Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., LGF +1.28% took the top spot for a second consecutive weekend, earning $9.5 million and bringing its cumulative domestic grosses to $33.3. million. It was followed by gangster film 'Lawless,' distributed by the Weinstein Co., which earned $6 million over the weekend.
'The Words,' a new release from CBS Films, grossed $5 million in its first weekend in theaters. The film, a romantic drama about a plagiarist, was produced independently for $6 million, and the CBS Corp. division acquired it for $2 million earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. 'The Words' attracted a 58% female audience, with 78% of moviegoers over the age of 25.
