So Diaz teams up with the cad’s wife (Leslie Mann) and other girlfriend (swimsuit model Kate Upton) to exact revenge.

The posters for the movie show an uptight Diaz with Mann and Upton hanging on her like they are teenage girls. It’s a weird image and doesn’t actually seem to have much to do with the plot of the movie. It makes it seem like no one involved really put too much effort into the film which is hitting theaters on a dead weekend before the summer movie season kicks off properly with The Amazing Spider-Man 2 next week.

The film is getting pretty poor reviews. It scores a 31 out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes. Exhibitor Relations expects the film will top the box office this weekend but with just $18 million. That’s not great for a $40 million budget movie.

The problem here isn’t that Cameron Diaz isn’t gorgeous or funny anymore. The problem is that she’s 40 and once actresses are over 35, their options narrow greatly. Unless you’re Angelina Jolie, there just aren’t that many great roles written for women heading into middle age. There are some. Sandra Bullock earned millions and an Oscar nomination for Gravity. Woody Allen usually has great roles for women. Amy Adams has had good luck working with David O. Russell on films like American Hustle.

They look at scripts (like this one) that star women of a certain age and are written by women and usually pass. When they do green light a film like this and it doesn’t do well at the box office, it makes it harder to green light the next one even if it’s a really good script. And that means even fewer roles for actresses like Diaz.

Diaz has a higher hill to climb with Annie where she’s filling shoes famously worn by Carol Burnett. If either film bombs, I hope Diaz will find better material for her skills.

It’s clear why Reese Witherspoon, another actress who is approaching 40, has backed out of the studio game in favor of developing films herself. Gone Girl, which features a fantastic female character in Amy, is from Witherspoon’s production company and she’ll next star in the big-screen adaptation of Wild, the best-selling memoir from Cheryl Strayed. Hopefully, more great actresses will start taking control of their own destinies and producing great films.
