English speakers are hung up on the word"up''
We put up with phrases like step up, punch up, line up, butter up, use up and belly up.
Houses are cleaned up, opened up, warmed up, lighted up, closed up.
Automobiles are gassed up, washed up, charged up, speeded up, slowed up, tied up, laid up.
People wind up being dressed up, made up, fattened up, suited up, and show up and live it up.
If they are mixed up, they have to hurry up and shape up or they'll be all fouled up.
If you think up other ups, don't call me up. All this "up'' business that somebody dreamed up just burnd me up.
