Hi everyone! Tonight I squeeze some time from my busy schedule to write you this “farewell letter”. Now my heart is filled with complicated feelings, half happy and half sad. I am happy because I know you have reaped tremendously in this BEC course. Your motivation to learn English, your vocabulary, your oral English level especially your debating skills, and your listening ability have all greatly been elevated. However, I feel sad because there are merely two classes left before our course come to an end, which means our teacher-and-student relationship will be concluded soon! How reluctant I feel to leave all of you!
I do now know whether you know I have been feeling somewhat great pressure since I took over this BEC class. Though it is not my first time to teach BEC, it is actually the first time I teach the students in my university. In the past I taught the adults who had already worked. I have been turning over whether my previous methods are still applicable to you and therefore make some adjustments. When I gave my firs class to you, I rejoiced that the overall level of your English was comparatively high!
With my teaching activity spreading, some of you are really excellent in English that it is far beyond my imagination. And your talent to learn English is also appreciable that it makes me feel overjoyed. For instance, Mr Zhang, a junior student majoring in English, participated in the CCTV Cup National Speaking Competition and won the first prize in our school! Then he went to Guangzhou to battle out with other talents, ending with the third prize in Guangdong Province. Another two super students are Ms Mao and Ms Lin, who performed wonderfully in each debating practice and listening test.
Every face of yours has been deep engraved in my mind. I am witnessing your constant endeavor. Even though some of you did not pass the vocabulary dictation test or the song dictation test, you are still far more brilliant than many others, because my requirements on you are really strict and harsh, accompanied with piles of homework. I know some of you have been working extremely hard, but did not perform well in each listening test and debating practice. But now I want to tell you that it does not matter because the tough you are suffering now has been exactly suffered by me in the past! So long as you persist in learning, in the near future, you will definitely struggle out of the cocoon and turn into a beautiful butterfly flying gracefully, delicately and freely in the air!
Losing is nothing, but learning is something!
I often tell you my motto that losing is nothing, but learning is something. In the course of learning English, we should not be too “profit-focused”! Here, the word “profit-focused” connotes that we should walk every solid step steadily towards our goal instead of yearning for instant success! We should intently accumulate every word, every knowledge point, every good sentence and every good article! Only by doing so can we lay down a solid foundation for your super English achievements. There is a common saying that every skyscraper is built from the ground. If you cannot have a good command of grammar as well as precise usage of each word you’ve learnt, it is out of the question for you to use English flexibly. If you can totally concentrate on your learning, in half a year or one year, you will suddenly realize that your English level has leapt to another stage!
Needless to say, generally speaking, the time you spend on English is more than others do. Whereas, what I want to mention is that you need to work harder, so do I myself. The way is too long to finish and we all need to strive! Since we are not living in the pure English-speaking environment, we need to create this environment by ourselves. Keep listening to CNN or BBC for twenty minutes per day, reading some English article on books or online when you are playing games, reserving some time for composing a short article or diary when you are chatting on QQ, getting up early in the morning to read half an hour by the lake. If you can make full use of the time you waste every day, then you have already gone farther than many others. But when you complain that you have no time to study English, it can illustrate two problems: one is that your interest in English is not strong enough to sustain your passion; the other is that you are unable to manage and use your time properly.
Our BEC course will soon come to an end. At the beginning of December you will step on the battlefield to fight. During the remaining time, I hope you can shift your focus to doing more exercise and oral English practice, and if allowed, remember more words. I believe most of you can pass the exam, and some of you may even get B or A! But no matter what your score might be, you will inform me of the result at knowing it! If you pass successfully, I feel happy for you from the bottom of my heart! But if you fail unfortunately, I will give my best encouragement to you for at least you have progressed a lot! If you can get a good score hopefully, say, if you are exactly the No.1 in our city (It is still possible!), then I will become a distinguished teacher immediately! Aha!
It is destined for us to stay in the same class! So I hope you can cherish your precious relationship and give each other a hand when needed in the future! Finally, I want to extend my best wishes to all of you! I hope you can keep a good shape and stride farther and better in the way of learning English! |
