The third installment of the 'Men In Blac' franchise kicked off the start of the summer season to earn $55 million in North America as of Sunday, according to early studio estimates.
The film, 'Men In Black 3,' from Sony Corp.'s Columbia Pictures, will look to boost that total by the end of the holiday weekend, keeping the top spot ahead of 'The Avengers,' which continued to set records through the weekend.
“The Avengers,” from Walt Disney Co.’s Marvel Studios, grossed $37 million over the weekend, bringing its cumulative domestic grosses to $500.5 million by its 23rd day of release and making it the fastest film to hit that milestone.
“Battleship,” from Comcast Corp.’s Universal Pictures, earned $10.8 million, bringing its cumulative domestic grosses to $44.3 million, while “The Dictator,” from Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures, took in $9.6 million, putting it in fourth place at the box office.
In fifth place was “Chernobyl Diaries,” from Time Warner Inc.’s Warner Bros. Pictures, which tallied $8 million in box-office receipts in its first weekend in theaters.
