慈 悲 的 奴 隶
Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, was captured by Union soldiers at the end of the Civil War and indicted for treason in 1866. Though many northerners bayed for his execution, one unlikely group petitioned for his release: the former slaves on his own Mississippi cotton plantation.
Manacled by his Union captors in an island fortress, Davis was freed after a two-year imprisonment, having avoided a trial. He returned to Richmond, Virginia, and thousands of admirers lined the two-mile route between his landing and his hotel.
美国内战结束时，南部邦联总统杰佛逊．戴维斯落在北军手上，一八六六年以叛国罪名被起诉。当时虽然不少北人狺狺然主张把他处死，有一群人却出乎意料要求把他释放：那群人从前正是戴维斯名下密西西比州棉树种植场上的奴隶。
戴维斯被北军当局铐起来，囚禁在一个岛上的城堡中，过了两年，得免审讯，获释出狱。他回到维吉尼亚州利其蒙市，动身往旅馆，两英里的路程两旁挤满了数以千计的仰慕者。
【附注】留意indict（起诉）的读音：这个字从前拼作indite，后来拼法变了，但读音没变，所以仍读inDITE，不可读inDICT，例如：He was indicted for fraud / on a charge of fraud （ 他 被 控 欺 诈 罪 ） 。 Bay 作 动 词 ， 指 猎 犬 追 赶 猎 物 时 不 断 吠 叫 。 Bay for 可 引 伸 解 作 一 群 人 嚷 要 某 些 东 西 ， 多 带 贬 义 ， 例 如 ： The rabble of angry youths bayed for an apology from CNN （ 那 群 没 理 性 的 愤 怒 青 年 然 要 有 线 新 闻 电 视 网 道 歉 ） 。
