辉 煌 的 发 明 (古德明)
In 214 BC, a powerful Roman force attacked the city of Syracuse, the home of the famed mathematician and inventor Archimedes. To hold off the Roman legions, he devised one ingenious weapon after another, among them a catapult which could hurl a ton of stones some six hundred feet and a crane which could be used to capsize invading ships.
His most brilliant contraption, however, was remarkable for its simplicity. Using an array of mirrors, Archimedes directed and concentrated the sun's rays onto the Roman ships and set them ablaze.
公元前二一四年，罗马大军进攻西拉库斯城。着名数学家兼发明家阿基米德住在城中，设计了多种巧妙武器抵御罗马军团，包括可把一吨石头投掷约六百英尺的弹弩，以及可把敌船弄翻的起重机。
阿基米德最辉煌的发明最是简单：他摆下镜阵，把阳光集中射向罗马战船，令战船火焚烧。

Ingenious是「精巧的」，和另一个常用字ingenuous（坦白的、纯真的）拼法相似，切勿混淆，例如：（ 1 ） He fastened the gate with an ingenious padlock （ 他 用 设计 巧 妙 的 挂 锁 把 大 门 锁 好 ） 。 （ 2 ） The ingenuous youth believed everything we said （ 我 们 说 什 么 ， 那 戆 直 小 伙 子 都 相 信 ） 。
Contraption 是 「 奇 妙 的机 器 」 ， 有 时 带 贬 义 ， 指 「 新 奇 的 古 怪 玩 意 」 ， 例 如 ： I have no use for this newfangled contraption for breaking eggs （ 这 新 奇 的 打 蛋 玩 意 ， 对 我 完 全 没有 用 ） 。
