崛起的世界大国——中国

The Chinese are coming, flexing their military muscle in joint war games with Russia. A wake up call: there is a new power on the horizon.
Bates Gill: Other countries in the region, namely Japan, United States, uh, need to be aware that they, the two countries, Russia and China, are moving forward more cooperatively and could pose some sort of counterbalance to other forces in the region.
Military matters surely on the agenda when China's President Hu Jingtao sits down with his United States counterpart George W. Bush. The Pentagon concerned about China's growing power in the Asia Pacific region. The firepower comes with economic clout— China, the world's fastest growing big economy. The US concern: China is undercutting American exports and swallowing up American jobs. How the two manage their relationships, say analysts, the key to global trade and security.
" Because you have the US already sitting there in a powerful position and China rising. So the key of the next 20 years, 10 to 20 years or more even, is how these two powers deal with each other.
Competition for oil crucial to that relationship. China sucking up nearly a third of global growth in oil demand, doing deals with so-called “rogue states” like Iran, Syria, Sudan. China oil giant, CNOOC, making a failed bid for US company Unocal. The attempted takeover opposed by US lawmakers creating new tensions with China.
"You could argue that in fact, the Bush policy towards China has probably been pretty successful up until recently. I think the Unocal, the oil issue, the sale of Unocal was a disaster for both sides. ”
Then there is textiles. The US putting limits on Chinese imports. From the military to diplomacy to business, strains in the US-China relationship barely concealed. China though keen to stress cooperation not conflict. " It is true we have some disagreements, but more importantly, we have extensive and important common interests.”
Hu Jintao wants to convince the United States that China is not a threat. At the same time, while the staunchest allies of the US is calling on President Bush to adopt a less hostile attitude to China, Australia's Prime Minister John Howard saying the rise of China is good for the world.
