But if you've been doing what you love — and you know you do it well — but still can't sell it, should you risk your financial security to keep going?
Here's the bottom line: Get real with yourself and go for the money.
Penelope Trunk writes in her blog:
"...There’s a wide range of things we are passionate about, and there’s a wide range of things we can make money doing. The trick is not to find the thing that allows us to earn the most money or the thing that we are most passionate about. The trick is to find the thing that combines passion and money and stick with it so you get great."
"You are not a failure if you don’t do what you love for a living. You are a practical person who knows that no one can do the stuff they are passionate about if they are worrying about food and rent. Support yourself somehow first, and then explore your passions from there."
Trunk says that just because you love doing something, doesn't mean that you should pick it to be your line of work. Instead pick one thing that you enjoy doing, but be realistic about whether it will make you enough money. If that doesn't work out, pick another interest because "making a choice and trying it is an important career skill."
But Kemberley Washington — former criminal investigator for the IRS turned educator —writes in The New Orleans Tribunethat people should always choose their passion because "if you take the appropriate steps, take your time, your passion can result in profit."
However, Washington advises that before you go quitting your job, you should make sure you are financial stable because following your passion might not bring in an adequate income at first. First, she says to "take the time to eliminate unnecessary expenses and get your financial house in order."
Or you can also consider working on your passion on the weekends to get some experience and build your reputation before making the switch to a full-time gig.
