Sometimes when I chat with my classmates, many of them will blame the drawbacks of college education. They think that college educational system, especially the exam system, can hardly cultivate real talents. A student majoring in finance as me said that theories in books are less than tedious and can barely work in our lives. He said that as long as we work hard at the end of the term, we can overcome the finals. Therefore, he asserted that those who can do well in the exam do not learn too much actually.
When hearing these comments, I will first examine the achievements the speaker has made in college before I consider the justification of his comments. Obviously, college exam-oriented education has some disadvantages, like the disconnection between theory and practice that renders students with high scores have low abilities. However, most students are not good for themselves. Most of the students who curse the college education system are, in an impolite manner, rubbish. Why do I say so? There is a popular saying that when we cannot change the environment, we can change ourselves. Those who have experience college life know that there is a wealth of freedom for college students. If you do not approve the college educational methodology, you can make full use of your spare time to develop your interest and strive for your future while making sure that you can pass the exam. If you can do so, the education system is indeed favorable to you. Why? As long as you can burn midnight oil for several weeks before the finals, you can pass the exam, which indicates before that you can draw upon most of your time to develop your own plan. Then after four years, you are doomed to become a modern elite!
Nevertheless, the reality is so disappointing. Most students who curse the educational system are not enterprising at all, sleeping late in the morning, playing computer games all day long or boasting with others. But when they talk with me, they can tell me a lot of common wisdom. On the one hand, they will attack the exam system and claim that taking exam is useless; on the other hand, they will boast their dreams and plans. If they act as they say, I will really admire them. But the point is that most of them just forget what they have said after we conclude our conversation and continue wasting their time. For these students, I will not argue with them face to face, but laugh at them in heart: Since you look down upon those who can do well in the exam, why don’t you demonstrate your own abilities? What have you done for your future? Some students claim CET4 or CET6 to be rubbish. But I really wonder how much score have they got. Take CET6 for example. If you can get more than 550 scores and criticize the exam, I will honor your ability. But if you can simply pass the exam or even cannot pass it but you curse it to be rubbish, then I think you are literally rubbish.
I often have the sense that we are too volatile and cannot do our work step by step. Many people can say all they can, but when it comes to action, they may shrink. Some people know little about something but dare to talk bi in the public. If all the audience are laymen, then everything is fine. But if there are some experts, he may be target to be laughed at. I remember I met a student of grade two in a meeting in our business school. He was sitting right beside me at that time and we chatted with each other. To my surprise, he told me he loved English very much and spent a huge amount of time studying it every day. As an English lover also, I intended to exchange learning experience with him. I asked him casually whether he had passed CET6. He said to me with a despising look, “CET6 means nothing to me. I would like to take BEC!” “Oh?” I pretended to be ignorant of BEC and asked, “What is BEC?” He despised me again and said, “You say you love English but do not know BEC? BEC means Cambridge Business English Certificate. It has three levels, namely preliminary, vantage and higher.” “Oh, so which level will you take?” He said to me proudly, “I will take Vantage first. Though I know I can definitely pass the Vantage, I want to learn some experience for the Higher.” Then he felt that I was too ignorant and the meeting was around the corner, so he stopped talking with me. after that, we met some several times on campus and he tended to teach me some English learning methods like how to enlarge vocabulary and enhance listening ability, and so on. Every time I would just listen to him with smiles until he left satisfactory. All the time we did not know each other’s name. until my BEC English corner began and he attended the oral English practice I held, he stared at me stunningly. Since then, he never teaches me how to learn English any more but asks me how to prepare for the BEC.
With my experiences accumulating, I came to a growing realization that we need to mind our speeches both in life and work. When you meet some unfamiliar topics of fields, you should not pretend to be an expert. When you are good at some fields, you should have a clear understanding of your scope and say something you are sure of. Do not overstate your ability and achievements, or once you meet someone much better than you, you will be totally humiliated. Therefore, I am increasingly appreciating some excellent friends around me. They are endowed with high learning and working ability and get decent scholarship every year. But after each exam if you ask about their performance, they will always say “it is bad!” But finally the result turned out to be quite exceptional! Many people say they are not sincere, but I hold a different perspective. On the contrary, I think they are smart. Why? Suppose if they say they have performed quite well but the result is terrible, then we may say they like talking big. But if they say their performance is bad and the result is really bad, we may say nothing about them. But if the result is stunningly good, we may all appreciate their modesty!
To my mind, I think we need strength, not impulse; we need courage, not rashness. All these are built on our step-by-step efforts instead of boasting wildly. Some people are not inclined to talk about their own plan with others, but they will do every little bit to march towards their goal. They are actually those who deserve our respect and learning most! |
