Humane, more support; inhumane, little
孟子
Meng Zi
In a battle, a favorable weather should give way to a favorable geological position, and a favorable geological position should give way to military union.
It is hard to break into a fort with long and consolidated walls, even though the enemy surround it without a leak. The enemy must meet a favorable weather before they surround the fort, but they still fail to overcome it. It indicates that a favorable weather should give way to a favorable geological position.
Protective wall is high enough, protective river is deep enough, armament is advance enough and food storage is large enough, but still local army abandon the fort and flee. It indicates that a favorable geological position should give way to military union.
Therefore, a ruler will not rely on the national boundary to govern his people, rely on hazardous mountains and rivers to protect his country, rely on its advance weapons to awe the world. A ruler implementing humane policy is doomed to earn people’s support, while a ruler implementing inhumane policy earn little. If he loses all the support, even his families and relatives will betray him. If he gains all the support, the whole world will go with him. A man with all the support will surely override a man betrayed by all. Therefore, a good ruler is destined to win so long as he is involved in a war. |
