This morning I read a piece of news. Its main idea is as follows: A woman, after giving birth to a child, was suffering postpartum hemorrhage. As the situation was increasingly deteriorating, she was in an urgent need of blood. But as her families had only 500 yuan at hand at that time, 10 yuan less than 510 yuan needed, the doctor did not permit to transfuse blood to her, which resulted in her death later.
Having finished the news, I was shocked to be speechless for a whole while. The price of 10 yuan should be a living life! It is hard for me to imagine the doctor could be so apathetic when witnessing the woman struggling because of bleeding. It is also hard for me to imagine th doctor could be so ruthless when witnessing the woman’s face turning pale and twisted because of bleeding. I don’t know whether the doctor had ever been questioned by his conscience and felt deeply regretful when the woman was finally taken away by death due to delayed treatment.
In pulic’s eyes, doctors are white angels that save lifes. In the event of SARS in 2001, countless doctors and nurses, for the sake of human well-being, left behind their superiority and family to combat with the disease and finally fell down. Countless moving stories, even though they are read now, can still push our tears out. But as a saying goes, no matter how delicate the picture is, there will be some drawbacks, and no matter how great the group is, there will be some shameless members. In terms of doctors, there are many great people indeed, but there are even more bad guys. I have no idea whether because the doctor has witnessed too many deaths in hospital, so when he sees a life leaving, he can feel so natural. Therefore, the doctor for the deceased woman could be so natural for her death. The crying baby then could by no means call up his conscience. As a result, a family has no female host, a man has no wife and a baby has no mother forever. He should kneel down in front of the whole family and keep confessing for the rest of his life. All of a sudden, a while angel turned out to be a white devil.
To my mind, the doctor mentioned above is just a miniature of our society. In china there are more such kind of doctors who place money over everything. Given enough money, he can not only save you but also sacrifice his life for you; without money, even though you are dying by his gate, he will not cast a glance at you. Coincidentally, I have ever read another piece of news. The main idea is as follows: a man came across a traffic accident and after operation, he got away from danger of life but still needed a long treatment. Whereas, as he could not accumulate enough money later to pay the medical fees, he was carried out of the hospital by doctors. At that time, the man and his families were crying heavily and many passers-by were also criticizing the doctors. But everything was in vain. The doctors were still busy with their own affairs without any response. It is beyond our wildest dream that such tragedy can still happen to our modern society. But the hard evidence permits us no doubt.
In this material-life-flourishing society, in many people’s eyes, the word “conscience” seems to lose its deserved status in their heart. They show their affection to another word named “money”. Given money, everything can be done easily. Without money, any talk is spared. When morality falls slave to money thoroughly, our world is not far from perishing. Beside blaming the doctors’ lost conscience, shall we need to reflect on the operational system in hospital? As the case cited at the beginning of this article, without enough money, the doctor will not transfuse blood to patients. But the money finally goes into the hospital’s income. Maybe the doctor can have a commission, but maybe not. What if the doctor tranfused blood to those who could not pay for it? Should he himself burden the loss? If the answer is positive and the system has not been changed, the tragedy will only repeat again and again in the future. The hidden stories behind the system can be learnt by my dear audience if you try to meditate on it. So here I will not further elaborate on it.
Presently, many people claimed the high medical fees and drug price. After the establishment of agricultural medical insurance system, people’s financial burden has been greatly reduced indeed and a lot of problems have been tackled. Nevertheless, it can hardly be denied that China’s medical resources are still insufficient. I am living in Shenzhen. Every time I went to the hospital, I had to wait at least for one hour until I saw the doctor. Sometimes I had to even wait for several hours. Then when I finally saw the doctor, he just did some casual routine checks for you and prescribed some medicine without knowing your disease clearly. It can only result in the patient’s long-time treatment. Worse still, the medical fee is shockingly high. A simple cold can render you some injection that may cost you 100 or 200 yuan a time. Sometimes it may soar to 400 to 500 yuan. If you go to hosptial for several times successively, it may cost you more than 1,000 yuan. It can be hardly borne by an average worker, not to mention migrant workers.
Another problem is the high drug price. Even though recently the Pharmacy Regulation Bureau has given orders to lower the price of basic drugs, but the margin is not satisfactory. I do not deny that drug-manufacturing companies need to earn some profits. Otherwise, no one will undertake a non-profit business. But the profits should be reasonable. According to some data, an average pharmaceutical store can have a profit rate of at least 35%. In general, it is 40%-50%. Some drugs can have a profit rate of 300% or more. For a drug store, the profit rate can be so staggeringly high, no to mention those drug manufacturers. Moreover, the drug industry is to a large extent a monopoly industry due to its strict barrier for entry. Not everyone can produce drugs. But demand for drugs will not change easily. It’s elasticity is very small. So the producer can set a high price and earn super profits.
Altogether, in the area of hospitals and medicine, our country still has a lot of problems. They are like a big tumor. If it is not removed radically and timely, its hazard will be enormous. The doctor responsible for this operation is exactly our governments and relevant organizations. We are waiting to see whether the operation will be a success or a failure. |
