我一直对他说我不知道怎么谢他, 他就半开玩笑地说: “Next time if I go to China and visit your city, you should be my tour guide. Ok?”

Reflection on the Negotiation on The Player
This week’s negotiation is more complex than the previous ones in terms of negotiated items. There are far more items that we should negotiate with the other party.
This time our team played as the new vice-president of production as National Artists Productions(NA), a major film studio in Hollywood. I would be negotiating with a young enormously successful Hollywood Director who has approached NA with an idea for a new movie. The director was considerably eminent and with his work, our movie could be a big hit. However, this director, while talented and currently very “hot” on the market, has gone significantly over budgeton his last two movies. Even though the movies were considered a box office success, won a number of awards and attracted critical acclaim, the budget overruns were viewed within the film industry as a serious problem and one that needed to be brought under control.
Therefore, we needed to put all the items on the table and negotiated with the director one by one. The first one is director’s salary. We learnt from the data that a director’s base salary on most recent films was around $ 400, 000. but we proposed a salary of $200, 000 first because we knew the director would surely want a higher deal. As our expectation, he wanted $500,000. After tough negotiation, the minimum salary he could accept was $450, 000, which definitely went beyond our budget. But we cleverly connected director bonus to the salary and claimed that if he wanted a higher salary, he should accept a lower bonus. Finally we reached a deal of $ 450, 000 salary and 1% bonus.
Then we moved on to negotiate the pre-production budget. This covered all the expenses related to preparing to shoot a major motion picture including script revisions, scouting locations, planning the production schedule, designing sets and costumes, etc. Generally speaking, a $ 250,000 pre-production budget was actually generous in the film industry for a film like this. But the director tended to be always going beyond the budget. Firstly he proposed a pre-production budget of $350,000 while we $250,000. After rounds of discussion, it seemed that they did not want to make a compromise. Then we proposed the Editorial Control on the table and claimed that if they wanted a pre-production budget of $350,000, we would like to promise it on the condition that we shared equally in all editing in the Editorial Control after the production of the movie. As Editorial Control meat a lot to the director, after second thought, he promised to accept a pre-production budget of $250, 000 on the condition that we could give him full editorial control. Considering the overall benefits, we agreed with him.
Then we moved on to discuss the location. We would like the film to be shot in and around the Los Angeles area. It was cost-saving and could also achieve a satisfactory result. But the director requested two extra exotic locations. It would add enormously to the total cost and went way out of our budget. We were reluctant to promise extra exotic location but the other party strongly insisted on at least one. Finally we asserted that we could provide him with one exotic location on the premise that we would not provide personal location budget. Personal location budget was the amount of money allocated to the director for his accommodation in the exotic place. It could also be a huge sum of money. But if we did not have exotic locations, the director could live in his posh Bel Air estate which was exactly sited in Los Angeles. Considering the huge personal location budget he would pay in the exotic places, the director promise that there could be no exotic places. But he requested that he shall be paid $300 per day for his personal location budget as compensation. He was really a good bargainer! Eventually we promised his request.
Later, we carried on to discuss the potential prospects for the Child star, Male Lead, Female Lead and Production Designer. As time was limited then, we simply asked the other party which terms meant more to him and told him meantime which meant more to us. Then we quickly reached the agreement.
Finally, we accomplished a highest score of 7400 points among the whole class, which indicated the evident effect of our strategies. The most useful tactic we adopted was not to single out every item we were going to negotiate. To be more specific, most of the times we should combine at least two items together. When we made a compromise on one item, we would also require the other party to make a compromise on another so that we could achieve a win-win result. When we could not reach a deal regarding three or more aspects, we would ask the other party which meant more to him and meantime told him which meant more to us. And then we could further make a compromise on the one that was less significant and gain more on the one that was more important.
The biggest pity was my relatively poor preparation. In the course of the negotiation, as I did not get very familiar with the content in each term, I would get stuck while the other party reasoned their idea with a novel “excuse”. But luckily my teammates prepared well for that and they could always respond effectively and efficiently. I really admire them in this respect. Another thing that deserves my attention is that as I am a new comer in Ireland who just came one month ago, I was unfamiliar with the stars or actors or actress in the country. Therefore, when my teammates and the director talked about the characteristics of each star and their main productions, I just felt awkward and kept speechless. I think I should expand my breadth in this area in the future. On the whole, I’ve reaped a lot in this activity.
