因两家的土地界线问题，觉得划分不公的李二虎争执中拔刀刺向冯大狗，看到汩汩冒出的鲜血，倒在地上一动不动的冯大狗，李二虎惊慌失措，吓得脸色煞白，仓皇搭车潜逃。辗转福建、广东、广西、湖南、湖北等多省，隐名埋姓，东躲西藏，以乞讨为生。一次拾荒中，李二虎在一张丢弃的报纸上瞧见一则新闻：七旬老头向当地警方自首，承认23年前杀死了自己的情人。由于已过我国刑法规定的最高20年的刑事责任追诉时效，杀人老汉有可能被无罪释放。
Due to the obscure boundary between two lands owned by two families, Li, who felt the division was not fair, stabbed Feng with a knife in an argument. Seeing Feng lying still and the blood streaming all over the ground, Li felt terrifically panic, face turning pale and slipping away. He went to various provinces such as Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei, etc, covering his real name. He tried to hide himself from the police and made his living by begging. One day, when Li was collecting some rubbish as usual, he spotted a piece of news in a deserted newspaper that a seventy-year-old man surrendered himself to the police and confessed that he killed his lover twenty-three years ago. As China’s Criminal Law stipulated that the maximum number of years of criminal responsibility was twenty years, the old man could probably be released without being charged.
李二虎顿时惊喜万分，掐指一算，时间过的真快，不知不觉中外逃21年了。也就是说，自己不用为杀人承担相应的刑事责任了。禁不住激动的心情，赶紧收拾行囊，来到车站，当即买了启程的车票。回到家乡，母子相见，悲喜交加，抱头痛哭。真是少小离家老大回，乡音无改鬓毛衰。母亲仔细端详着胡子拉碴，瘦骨嶙峋的李二虎，心疼地说：“儿子，这些年你音信全无，不知道妈有多担心。”
Li felt considerably surprised and pleased at the news. He counted the number of years when he was escaping from the police and learnt it was twenty-one. That is to say, he would not face any legal penalty for his murder in the past. Feeling extremely excited, he dashed back to his house and packed his luggage, then arrived at the bus station and bought a ticket back home. Coming back home and seeing his mother, he felt even a mixed feeling of happiness and sorrow, hugging his mother and tearing cats and dogs. He had been away from home for such a long time and become old now. His mother looked at Li, a skeletal man with bushy beards, saying sadly, “My dear son, you have lost contact with us all these years. You’ll never know how much I worried about you.”
“妈，我错了！”
“当年你为什么要跑啊？”
“杀了人，我害怕被警察抓住判刑枪毙。”
“你要是投案自首，该多好！”母亲叹息一声说。
“杀人偿命，那时投案自首的话，我早已魂归天国了。”李二虎从衣袋里掏出保存的报纸，指着上面的那则新闻，满脸喜悦地说，“妈，你看看，现在结果就不一样了！”
“Mum, I know I am wrong!”
“Why did you escape at that time?”
“I killed someone, so I had to go. Otherwise I would be captured and sentenced to death.”
“What if you had gone to the police and confessed the crime! It would be wonderful!” His mother sighed.
“No, of course not! If I had surrendered at that time, I would have lost my life!” Li took out the newspaper from his pocket and showed the news to his mum, saying happily, “Mum, look! The result is different now!”
母亲认真的念了一遍，疑惑不解地说：“这是什么意思？你又没杀死人。”
“我没杀死人？”李二虎眼睛瞪得溜圆。
“是啊！”母亲点点头，“你捅冯大狗的那刀没在要害处，经医院抢救治疗，不久便恢复了健康。”
“那我......”李二虎惊呆了，一下跌坐在地上，半晌才愣愣地说，“那我这21年不就白白逃跑了吗？”
His mother read the news carefully and said with a puzzled face, “What does it mean? You did not kill anyone.”
“I did not kill anyone?” Li asked with his eyes real open
“No, you did not!” She shook her heads, “You did not stab the fatal point on Feng. After rescue in hospital, he recovered soon.”
“So…….” Li was totally stunned, slumping onto the ground. After quite a while, he came back to his consciousness and said, “My twenty-one years of escaping turns out to be in vain!”
