最近仍然有很多深大的师弟师妹问我如何写出国留学的PS, 同时我也看了好多篇, 感觉都存在不同程度的问题, 都需要动 “大手术”, 所以我把最近帮一个申请美国留学的一个朋友写的PS放到下面, 让有需要的同学再参考一下. 其实PS没有固定的格式或者模板, 我之前给大家举的例子只是其中一个模式, 所以大家不用局限于那个模式. 你可以采取你觉得合适的结构. 但是不管你采取什么结构, 你的行文必须清楚, 结构必须明了, 也就是要让看你PS的人觉得你的PS是有逻辑有顺序的, 但不是杂乱无章. 另外, 哪些东西需要花大笔墨, 哪些只需简略提一下, 哪些根本不用写进去, 需要你们自己好好衡量! 希望下面这篇PS可以给你们一些启发!
There is a popular saying in China that only those who help themselves will be helped by God. It has been my motto for a long time. No one can survive without the help of others and no one can progress without access to ample physical facilities. For me, a student who is enterprising and eager to establish my own career, helping myself means to study arduously and practice my capabilities both in work and life. By “helping myself” for such a long time, including the four years of college study, now I need the help from “God” to help me realize my dream, and your prestigious institution is exactly the “God” that can guide me to the culmination of my career.
As a student in Sun Yat-sen University, a renowned university in China and even the best university in the South China, I am now writing in support of my application for acceptance in your graduate program of Mathematical Finance.
Though my major is computational mathematics in my undergraduate education, I show great interest in economic phenomena and issues, such as how the market is organized and functions, what determine the prices of various commodities, and how the banks are operating, etc. Driven by this irresistible curiosity, I borrowed a wealth of books concerning finance from my school library, such as Bank Management, Corporate Financial Management, Financial Investments, etc, and was totally addicted to them. On top of that, busy as my major courses were, I still managed to squeeze time to attend some classes and lectures that were originally designed for finance majors. Due to my hard work in finance, I’ve got a sound mastery of financial knowledge that could enable me to pursue my further study in this area. During the 2008 global financial tsunami, while witnessing how tremendously it had influenced people’s lives, I also came to realize the significance of a sound and stable financial system to the public. More importantly, I had kept track of the crisis for its whole process and collected relevant data to study its causes, its development, and its ending. I was eagerly intended to probe into the drawbacks of the current US financial system and tried to work out an equilibrium between financial openness and risks. Due to my lack of relevant knowledge, I failed to achieve it eventually, but I did have a more profound understanding of the US and Chinese financial systems. To my mind, losing is nothing, but learning is something.
I did not choose finance as my major after I attended the college entrance exam because I did not have an appropriate perception about finance. But since I touched it, I could not help being fascinated with it and even wished to change my current major. But I was turned down by my school. However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. By studying the modules in my major, I have cultivated sharp mathematical skills and computer skills, which can be evidenced in my transcript. And it is widely acknowledged that mathematical not only entails rich financial knowledge from a student, but also requires him to master super mathematical and computing skills. Therefore, I do believe I have met the two critical requirements for learning mathematical finance. My study in the past emphasized the systematic exercitation in basal mathematical skill and concluded the full training of program designing. At the beginning of my study in college, I did not realize the importance of some courses, so I did not perform very well. But later, I spared no effort to study and got satisfactory scores in some courses, like Mathematical Analysis. Some scores in some course were still not very high due to the high difficulties of the exams, but my scores still ranked top 30% among all the students in my major, such as Probability and Statistics.
Not only did I place emphasis on theoretical learning, I also attached great importance to practices, such as auditing a book called Western Economics, Corporate Finance, and investing in stock market with the money I earned from my part-time jobs. Moreover, I have fully exercised myself in research skills by finishing a Year Thesis in the third year. My fellow student and I successfully received fund in registration of science and research projects, and we published a paper, A Hybrid Genetic Algorithm for Container Loading Problems with Multi-restrict, which required complicated computational and mathematical skills. Also, with my unyielding efforts, I worked very hard on my Diploma Thesis and finally got A. all these practices conduced to my proficiency and communication skills and teamwork spirits. What is more, I became more proficient with C++ and matlab.
I have been considerably fascinated by the books written by Jim Rogers, a worldwide famous investor. I demonstrate great interest in what he has been engaged in and learn from his books that a professional investor should know to analyze the macro-economic circumstances and the specific financial conditions of a company with the professional skills and knowledge acquired, which is exactly I am fond of as my career. I resolve to become a professional investor who can utilize qualified professional knowledge to invest wisely.
