Microsoft has filed a formal complaint with European competition regulators over Google’s dominance of the internet search market on the continent, escalating an argument that has already placed the internet company at the centre of a probe by Brussels.

Microsoft alleges that Google is abusing its dominance of the online search market in Europe, of which it controls about 95 per cent, and that it is impeding fair competition.

The filing adds to complaints by several other companies, including one owned by Microsoft and one that is supported by a Microsoft-funded lobby group, over what they claim are Google’s restrictive practices and bias in the advertising and search markets.

Brad Smith, senior vice-president and general counsel at Microsoft, wrote in a blog post that the software company was concerned about a broadening pattern of conduct by Google “aimed at stopping anyone else from creating a competitive alternative”.

Microsoft alleged that since acquiring YouTube, Google had put in place a number of measures to restrict competing search engines from properly accessing it for their results. It also alleged that in 2010, and again more recently, Google had blocked Microsoft’s new Windows smartphones from operating properly with YouTube.

It’s done the same thing for the iPhones offered by Apple, which doesn’t offer a competing search service,” Mr Smith said.

Microsoft also alleged that Google was restricting its advertising customers access to their own data, discriminating against would-be competitors by making it more expensive for them to obtain prominent ad space on its site, and blocking access to content owned by publishers.
