最近一个在惠州一家翻译公司工作的朋友找我, 说他们公司最近刚刚和一批英语专业或者其他专业背景但英语挺强的应届毕业生签了合同, 在九月份正式工作之前, 他们现在要对这批未来的员工进行培训. 他说公司需要一些资深的译员对这批学生进行训练, 特别是修改他们对不同类型文章的翻译, 并给这批学生提供建议. 而恰巧这两个月他们公司的业务量很大, 非常繁忙, 根本无法调动足够的有经验的译员来对这批学生进行训练. 于是, 他问我有没有兴趣加入他们的行列, 帮这批新手修改一下他们的译文, 并给予他们一些指导, 他们公司会支付相应的费用给我. 刚开始我想推掉的, 因为我最近时间非常紧, 可是那位朋友一直在试图说服我, 而且说我每天只需要改两篇文章就行了, 不会占用我太多时间. 我想, 既然这样, 我也不妨试着做一下, 反正我每天都要进行翻译练习的, 而且既然是翻译公司新招聘的员工, 即使是新手, 水平肯定也不会差, 改起来也不会太麻烦, 于是我答应了.
改了几天, 我首先不得不说一句: 这批新手们英语水平确实不错. 之前也有些网友或者认识的朋友时不时发他们的翻译给我改, 可是我觉得, 他们中大多数人的英语水平都无法和翻译公司的新手比. 听说, 这批新手们, 只要是英语专业的都考过专业八级的, 有些还挺高分的. 而非英语专业的都考了BEC高级或者托业的. 但是正如我之前所说的, 英语水平高并不代表翻译水平也高, 翻译是英语学习中另一个更高层次的东西, 它是需要长期的练习和实战经验才可以逐步提高的. 经过修改那批学生的翻译, 我发现了许多我曾经提到过的问题. 刚好今天我要写一篇总结性的报告给他们看, 所以就趁着写日记的机会把这篇报告融合在我的日记中. 刚好我又帮一个朋友修改了一篇美文翻译, 所以我想以这篇美文翻译为例来总结一下大家翻译过程中经常出现的问题以及对策.
学会遗忘

(标题大小写没注意, forget 首字母应该大写. 关于标题的大小写是有特定的规则的, 希望不清楚的同学自己查阅)
(1)上天赐给我们很多宝贵的礼物，其中之一即是＂遗忘＂．只是我们过度强调＂记忆＂的好处，却反而忽略了＂遗忘＂的功能与必要性．

点评: 首先要注意时态, 应该把第一句的 “rewards” 改为现在完成时, 表示 “上帝已经赐给了我们很多礼物”. 另外, 原文最后的 “necessaries” 宜改为 “significance”. 这其实是大多数译者的通病—对 “字” 入座. 这是一个译员的大忌. 这里的 “必要性” 根据原文的意思, 也就是重要性, 而如果你译成 “necessaries” , 尽管在意思上勉强可以接受, 可是却不能将原文的意思更加淋漓尽致地表达出来.
(2) 例如：失恋了，总不能地址沉溺在忧郁与消沉的情境里，必须忙尽快遗忘。股票失利，损失了不少金钱，当然心情苦闷提不起精神。此时，也只有尝试着去遗忘。期待已久的职位升迁，人事令发布后竟然不是你！情绪之低落可想而知。解决之道无它，只有勉强让自己遗忘。

点评: 首先这位译者对于某些词的词性及用法把握不到位. 比如说, 原文的depress是个动词, 应该改为 depression 这个名词. 另外有个别句子衔接不顺畅, 比如说第一句的 “in fact” 被我改成 “instead”. 另外这段话作者前面几句都用了 “when” 来引导状语从句, 形成一种排比的架势, 可是当翻译 “期待已久的职位升迁，人事令发布后竟然不是你” 这句话时却突然改变了这种架构, 显得很不美观, 所以我把那句话也同样改为when来引导了. 这就需要译员们注意, 当你决定采用某种工整的句式来表达一段话的意思时, 一定要 “工整到底”, 翻译是讲究美感的东西, 需要你在表达清楚原文意思的基础上让读者有一种舒畅的感觉.
(3) 可见，“遗忘”在生活中有多么重要！然而想要遗忘，却不是想像中那么容易。遗忘是需要时间的。只不过，如果你连“想要遗忘”的意愿都没有，那么，时间再长也无济于事。

点评: 这一段小小的译文反映出很多翻译学习者的通病: 罗嗦. 翻译要求在表达清楚原文意思的基础上尽量追求简洁与优美, 可是很多翻译学习者翻译出来的句子却是长篇大论, 让人读得很累. 比如说这段话中, “遗忘是需要时间的” 如果没有原文而单独译这句话, 那么原译者的句子是对的, 可是放在这篇文章背景中, 就不需要讲这么久了, 只需要说 “it needs time”就行了.
(4)一般人往往很容易遗忘欢乐的时光，但对于哀愁的经历却经常忆起，这是对遗忘哀愁的一种抗拒。换言之，人们习惯于淡忘生命美好的一切，但对于痛苦的记忆，却总是铭记在心。为什么呢？难道我们真的如此笨拙？

点评: 首先, 这位朋友把 “经历” 译成 “experience”是错误的, 正确的应该是其复数形式 “experiences”. Experience 作单数时表示 “经验”, 是不可数名词, 其复数形式才是表示 “经历”. 很多译者没有清楚地区别某些名词的单数和复数的区别, 以为全是一样的, 其实最后意思可能大相径庭. 比如说, spirit 在表示 “精神”时是不可数名词, 可是表示 “心情, 情绪” 或者 “烈酒” 的时候, 却往往用复数形式. 这些细节性的知识虽然麻烦, 可是作为一名优秀的英语学习者和译员是必须要掌握清楚的! 另一个例子是compass,用单数时表示 “罗盘, 指南针”, 可是用作复数(compasses)时, 就表示 “圆规”了.
另外, 当翻译 “人们习惯于淡忘生命美好的一切” 这句话时, 这位朋友用了 “get used to”, 其实还是不太妥当的. Get used to 表示 “习惯性地做某事”, 这里的某事一般是一种生活习性或者习惯, 比如说 I get used to running in the morning. 而原文中的 “习惯” 是表示 “往往” 的意思, 和get used to 还是有区别的, 所以我把它改为tend to, 这样才更符合原文的意思. 另外, get used to 的to 是作介词, 后面要加动名词, 而原译文中的forget却用了原形, 这在语法上也说不过去.
(5) 不，当然不是。关键在于我们的“执著”。我们很少静下心来检查自己“已有的”或“曾经拥有的”，都总是“看到”或“想到”自己“失去的”或“没有的”。这，当然决定了难以遗忘。

点评: 这位朋友对词性把握不清是他翻译的最大问题, 大家可以看到, 这里的 “执著” 其实是贬义词, 意为固执己见, 顽固不化. 可是译者却将其译为 perseverant 这个褒义词, 表 “坚持不懈” 的精神, 这显然是不妥的. 另外, 第二句中的 “检查”, 译者将其译为 “examine”, 是典型的逐字翻译. 这里的 “检查” 并非是 “examine” 中的检查, 而是指 “反省, 反思”, 所以我把它改为 “reflect”. 另外最后那句话的翻译同样是犯了逐字翻译的毛病, 请读者自己查看.
(6) 的确，我们这一代的人，好像个个都太精明了。无论是待人或处事，很少检查自己的缺点，总是记得对方的不是，以及自己的欲求。其实到头来，还是很少如愿，因为，每个人的心态正彼此相克。

点评: 请大家先看这位朋友翻译的第一句话. 他译成: Indeed, everyone in our generation is too smart. 这显然有逻辑毛病, 为什么说 “我们每个人都太精明了” ? 所以, 这要引起我们译员们的注意: 你在翻译别人的文章时不仅要充当译者, 也要充当 “修改者”, 要适时地根据原文的真正意思来修正自己的翻译, 而不是照字逐译. 这里原文的意思其实是: 我们很多人都太精明了. 所以我把译文改过来了. 另外, 原译者再次犯了 “对字入座” 的毛病, 他把 “精明” 译成smart. 显然, 这里的 “精明” 是贬义词. 大家再看一下后面几句话就会发现, 这里的 “精明”, 其实是 “以自我为中心, 不顾别人”的意思, 所以根据 “实质重于形式” 的原则, 应译为 “egoistic”.
(7) 反之，如查这个社会性中的每个人，都能够 试图将对方的不是，及自己的欲望尽量遗忘，多检讨自己并改善自己，那么，彼此 之间将会产生良性的互补作用，这也才是我们所乐意见到的。
网友译文: Vice versa, if everyone in the society does their utmost to forget others imperfection and their own lust, and try their best to examine and improve themselves. It will create benefit support for each other. That is what we are glad to see.
我修改后的: However, if everyone in our society can do their utmost to forget others’ wrongdoings and their own lust, and try their best to reflect on and improve themselves, it will be beneficial for us to learn from each other. That is exactly what we are looking for.
点评: 首先, 原译者仍然对词义把握不准确. 这里的 “反之”, 其实是表示转折, 应该用however, 而原译者却用了vice versa, 这是错误的. Vice versa的意思是 “反之亦然” ,比如说: Once I finish my report, I will send it to you, vice versa.(我一写好我的报告就发给你, 你写完了也要发给我). 它是表示一种相互对等的关系, 并不是表转折. 另外最后那句 “彼此之前会产生良性的互补作用”, 原译者译为 “it will create benefit support for each other”, 让我读了实在感到费解. 原句的意思是: 只要大家多检讨自己的缺点与不足, 多学习别人的长处, 会大有裨益. 所以此时我们绝对不能按照字面意思来译, 而需要用英语把深层的意思明显地表示出来, 所以我译为: it will be beneficial for us to learn from each other.
写到这里, 全文已经结束了. 从这篇例文就可以看出很多译员在进行翻译时遇到的许多问题, 其中最严重的是逐字翻译, 忘文生义以及词汇意思把握不当. 正如我所说的, 一个优秀的翻译员必定是一个英语高手, 可是一个英语高手却未必是一个优秀的翻译员. 如果你想不经过长期大量的练习就想当一名优秀的翻译, 哪怕你终生在学习英语, 也是不可能达到的. 另外除了要练习以外, 我们很多译员也忽视了 “学习”. 这里的 “学习” 是指去阅读和品味一些名家高手们的翻译, 看看别人是怎么译的, 别人都用了哪些词, 哪些句式, 多思考为什么你不会用这些东西? 只有经过这样不断的积累和学习, 你才可以进一步提高你的翻译水平. 否则你译来译去也是原地踏步. 学习与练习, 缺一不可. 这是我最后给各位翻译爱好者的忠告. |
