As we all know, economy is the foundation of modern society. It can literally represent a country's overall strength and status. In our current, relatively peaceful, international situation, the effect of a country’s economy has a far greater impact than its military power.
Therefore, when the financial system functions well, we all benefit from the prosperity of the economy. Here, in China, all our people enjoy their rights to education, employment, medical care, old-age care, and housing. As long as there is economic growth, there is prosperity. But if growth is slowed down or reversed, a rapid disaster is in the making. Do you remember two years ago when the United States had a real estate crisis? It not only affected their real estate, but also their banking system, economic investments, employment, and business. That crisis alone had an economic effect on many countries including China. Millions of people lost jobs; many of them couldn’t even afford food and other basic necessities.
Since then, economy has become my top concern. It not only affects me, but all of you as well. As you all know, in recent years, China has suffered from many natural disasters, such as the Wenchuan earthquake, Southern floods, and the Yushu earthquake. When faced with these catastrophes, we did not give up the desire for a better life. Why is that, ladies and gentlemen? Maybe, you will say that it is because of our strong national spirit; however, may I suggest that it is the strong national spirit that is supported by a strong economy? Not long ago when rain-triggered landslides hit Zhouqu County in Gansu province, the survivors believed in our government to rebuild and move forward. Our government is able to do this because of our economic prosperity.
Finally, I want to say that a sustainable growing economy is a necessity for China’s future stability. Economy has an important impact on every aspect of our lives, and its development requires our full attention. Do you remember the slogan of 2010 Shanghai World Expo? Yes, “Better city, Better life.” But today I’d like to say “Better economy, Better life.” |
