Talent or Labor?
I have a friend who is a lawyer as well as a part-time lecturer in a college. He often employs some students to be his research assistants.
He had several young assistants who had been with him for two or three years and we knew each other long time ago. Among them there was a girl called Yuky. I remember the first time I saw her, she was holding a lot of file boxes and coming down the stairs as if performing tricks. She kept sweet smiles in the face and spoke lovely words. My friend said to me, “Yuky is a very good girl.”
I had thought that my friend was very satisfied with Yuky and that Yuky would definitely stay in his law firm to work after graduation. However, unexpectedly, one day when I passed by a booth in a computer exhibition, I saw Yuky yelling, “It is the last chance! Very cheap price! You’re gonna regret if you don’t buy one!” “When did you leave the law firm?” I was squeezing through the crowd and almost crying to Yuky.
Her eye sockets suddenly turned red. “I left the firm three months ago. The teacher said that I was not suitable to work in that line. So I have to leave……”
Hearing what she said, I felt sad for her, but had little idea how to comfort her. I cried to her again, “So are you doing fine here?” “Not bad! Anyway it is also a job for me.” She tried to keep smiling and encouraged herself.
After some time, I met my friend again and realized that his assistants were fewer. I could not see any assistant like Yuky who always kept smiles in the face. “Are you doing downsizing?” I joked on him, “I cannot see a sweet smiling face here any more.”
My friend smiled to me, “Are you saying Yuky? I had her leave the firm. She is not suitable for the job.” “Oh, really? But I think she was working hard.” I said. “Working hard is not enough for me. What I need is talent, not labor.”
I felt shocked at his words.
To be honest, I seldom thought of the matter of talent and labor before. I had long held that so long as we spent enough effort on our work, we could surely do it well. I had neglected the importance of specialty and preciseness. So talent is the most important for a firm.
If we cannot go with right methods, what we do will only turn out to be in vain. If we cannot make ourselves more professional, we can never become a talent but only a labor. Labors can be seen everywhere, while talents need to be sought and cultivated. “You can train her to be a talent.” I still did not give up.
Glancing at me with weary expressions, he said, “Some people have positioned themselves as talents while some do not care about it at all! How can I cultivate someone to be a talent if he cares little about it?”
All of a sudden, I thought of what Yuky said to me in the exhibition, so I said to my friend, “It is also not that bad. It is also a job.”
“Maybe it is because she thinks that all the jobs are not bad that she loses competitiveness.”
I sank into silence eventually.
So are you a talent or a labor? What do you think?
